The Might of Video Games – and an All-Too-Common Tale

Rocksteady Studios, creators of the fan-loved and critically acclaimed video game series Batman: Arkham, officially teased their next DC Comics-based project back in 2020 – five years after the release of their last major game. There was no shortage of rumors and hype for this game. Years later, gamers’ long and eager wait finally seemed over with the release of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League (“SS:KTJL”) on January 30, 2024.

And the release was nothing short of a disaster. Players were massively disappointed: SS:KTJL operated on online multiplayer servers which frequently crashed (unlike the single-player Batman: Arkham games), critics panned what they viewed as uninspired, monotonous gameplay, and both fans and journalists massively lambasted a particular plot decision. (Spoiler alert: Batman isn’t alright.

Rocksteady’s reputation, as well as that of its publisher, Warner Bros. Games, took a major hit. SS:KTJL has since received updates and new content releases, but the damage has been done.

OK, so a bunch of gamers didn’t get what they wanted in a video game. What’s the big deal?
